Its location between the Ria and the sea is the main reason many visitors come to São Jacinto in July, August, and September.  While the rest of the Iberian Peninsula experiences sweltering summer heat, São Jacinto’s summer guests enjoy a refreshing ocean breeze, a spectacular beach, and a ferry terminal within walking distance if they need their city life fix.

What else is happening here during the summer of 2026? Check out this month-by-month summer guide for São Jacinto and surroundings. It includes practical notes on the Forte da Barra - São Jacinto ferry, the Blue Flag-awarded beach, parking, restaurants, and the main events, with the most important dates listed first.

This post also covers details about the São Jacinto event that attracts visitors from all over the world. You may not want to miss it. Or maybe, you DO want to miss it, because it’s the only weekend each year when São Jacinto gets really crowded, and you prefer it quieter.

In the latter case, plan your stay around it and perhaps use that particular weekend - more about it below - for an overnight excursion to Porto, Coimbra, or the restored Ribanca Village near a magical river beach in the hills above Aveiro.

Before you arrive: São Jacinto - Forte da Barra ferry, car, parking, and food

The electric ferry between Forte da Barra and São Jacinto is part of daily life here. You can board it on foot, with your bicycle, motorcycle, or car.

On a gorgeous day, of which the Aveiro region has many — not only in summer — the silent ride across the Ria, with views toward the lighthouse of Barra Beach, the Port of Aveiro, and São Jacinto, feels like a mini-cruise.

Once you left the “mainland” behind and step off the ferry in São Jacinto, you’ll get the gist of the Casa dos Jacintos tagline. It could be São Jacinto’s unofficial motto: “Worlds Away, Next Door.”

If you arrive by car on a peak summer weekend, plan to bring a bit of patience. Parking in São Jacinto is usually much easier than in downtown Aveiro or the beach towns south of the Barra channel. On a busy summer season weekend, though, especially during that one busy event mentioned earlier — we’ll get to it — it may take you a few minutes longer. Disregard no-parking signs at your own risk — the authorities DO enforce restrictions.

For restaurants, one simple tip: do not leave for dinner too late if you didn’t make a reservation. São Jacinto is small. For a village its size (~900 residents off-season), it has an abundance of local restaurants, cafés, and bistros, plus the legendary Progresso bakery for coffee and pastries. A resort town with unlimited seating, it is not.

In July and August, depending on the restaurant you’ve set your eyes on, put in a reservation. The beach and the Dunes Nature Reserve, with its expansive network of walking paths and hiking trails, are the main reasons visitors flock to São Jacinto this time of the year.

The vast and sandy São Jacinto Beach (Praia de São Jacinto) is Aveiro's own "house beach", but due to its "insular" location, not nearly as crowded as Praia da Barra and Costa Nova beach to the south. Photo: Alex Alves

Praia de São Jacinto, Aveiro’s own “house beach”, is wide, sandy, and backed by dunes. It's also super clean - let's keep it this way. Check out this side-by-side comparison of this and other beaches nearby in the Aveiro Beach GuideSão Jacinto is where you go when you need the opposite of a small urban beach that puts you towel-to-towel with strangers. Bring water, sunscreen, and also wind protection, like a beach wind screen or umbrella.

July: beach days, Festival dos Canais, Chefs on Fire, and Corrida das Areias

July is summer without the heaviest August feeling. It is a good month for active guests: morning beach walks, cycling along the Ria, a swim when the sea allows, and an afternoon or evening ferry trip into Aveiro. Do you enjoy running? Corrida das Areias (July 12, 2026) is a local summer running event in São  (, featuring a sandy route through beach terrain. Total distance: roughly 12 km. Those who prefer a slower pace are invited to participate in a solidarity walk.

In downtown Aveiro, July is the month of the popular Festival dos Canais. In 2026, it runs from 15 to 19 July (official source). The city turns its streets, canals, squares, and gardens into performance spaces. From traditional dance to techno pop to experimental theater, the Festival of Canals offers something for everyone. Expect street theatre, music, dance, contemporary circus, art installations, and family-friendly programming.

For São Jacinto summer guests, especially those with children, the easiest way to join the party is to cross by ferry, continue into Aveiro, see one or two performances, have dinner, and return before everyone gets tired. If you are choosing only one event, Festival dos Canais is the easiest fit.

“Chefs on Fire” also returns to Aveiro in 2026 during the Festival dos Canais, from 17 to 19 July, at Parque Infante D. Pedro. This food-and-music event is built around slow cooking over fire. It is ticketed (official tickets page), with lunch and dinner sessions. Holiday-makers seeking new food experiences are advised to check early, as the best time slots may fill up quickly.

July is also a good month for the classic Aveiro activities (more about them here): a Moliceiro boat ride on the canals, a visit to the Salinas de Aveiro salt pans, or a leisurely bike ride around the Ria.

If you have limited time, choose the salt pans for the clearer link to Aveiro’s history and working landscape. Or you simply stay put in São Jacinto and keep chilling between the beach and the Ria, enjoying the fishing village's distinct island vibe.

August: Cod Festival, city shade, São Jacinto Dunes Festival, and busy weekends

August is Aveiro’s busiest month. Get the most out of it by planning around the summer heat, parking, and crowds. Downtown Aveiro offers many air-conditioned public indoor spaces and shaded outdoor areas for cooling down. The Aveiro Museum / Santa Joana is a good choice on days when Aveiro feels hot or overrun by tourists who get bussed through from Lisbon or Porto.

A short stroll down Avenida Araújo e Silva from the museum gets you to the Parque Infante D. Pedro. This historic city park features plenty of shade, ponds, bridges, picnic areas, and places for children to move around.

Also on the “mainland” across the Ria from São Jacinto, Ílhavo and Gafanha da Nazaré put on one of the region’s big summer food events: the Festival do Bacalhau. In 2026, this annual celebration of all things codfish runs from August 12 to 16 at Jardim Oudinot. Never heard of it before?

Then this is your opportunity to partake in a typical Portuguese event steeped within local traditions: healthy cod dishes served in large tents, show cooking, plenty of family activities, nightly pop concerts, and a location tied closely to the region’s maritime history. The concert line-up announced for 2026 includes Quim Barreiros, Carolina Deslandes, Gabriel o Pensador, Delfins, and Ricardo Ribeiro.

Jardim Oudinot also provides the backdrop for one of the summer’s more playful local traditions, the “Corrida Mais Louca da Ria” canal regatta of homebuilt watercraft. Don’t expect a polished “made for tourism” event. Instead, come to cheer on daring locals and wash-ashores at a wacky “anything goes, if it floats” race featuring see-worthy, but definitely not sea-worthy contraptions.

For lively evenings in August, visit downtown Aveiro, which features open-air concerts, street parties, late streetside dining, and nightlife around Praça do Peixe. Barra and Costa Nova also have a more active summer beach scene.

For most visitors of Casa dos Jacintos,  especially couples and families who prefer tranquility at the end of a day full of discoveries, the best part is returning to São Jacinto afterward. Or just staying put in the first place and enjoying the village’s relaxed island vibes, including the balmy summer breeze from the ocean.

The São Jacinto August event to plan for (or to avoid, if you came for the calm and don't like crowds?) That would be the Festival Dunas de São Jacinto.

Each year, its air show, open-air concerts (on the Ria promenade), and beach activities attract performers and spectators from as far away as Australia, Brazil, Canada, the UK, and the US. When planning to attend (admission is free), be careful when searching online: some web pages still display outdated information from previous years.

In 2026, the dates to keep in mind are 21-23 August, with the final program to be confirmed on the official festival and municipal channels. And keep an eye out for the special ferry schedule and beach shuttle services during the festival.

If you are staying in São Jacinto over the festival weekend, expect more people, more sound, and less parking flexibility than usual. If you like events, and especially for families with children, it is a great time to be here. If you want the quietest possible stay, choose another August week or come visit in September, when things are noticeably quieting down from all that summer excitement.

September: quieter beach, cycling, reading, and softer photo light

September is the favorite month for many visitors who return to São Jacinto year after year. Most school-holiday guests have left, but the weather still accommodates beach days, long walks, bike rides, and excursions in the region.

Ocean temperatures are still inviting, the light softens, and the village settles back into its normal pace. This is the month for “São Jacinto time.”

“As soon as you get off the ferry, go on São Jacinto time. Rather than rushing through on a day trip from Aveiro, feel the rhythm and reset your inner clock here. Relaxe!”

Walk the beach without rushing or discover the area's hiking trails. Ride a bicycle along the Ria. Sit on a balcony and read the book you packed months ago. Go to Aveiro for lunch or dinner without having to deal with the summer’s evening crowds.

Visit the salt pans and the museums or stroll  along the canals on a weekday. Or discover Ílhavo’s Maritime Museum. On 26 September 2026, it will hold its Festa dos Bacalhoeiros at Jardim Oudinot in Gafanha da Nazaré (official source). If you are interested in the people and stories behind the region's cod-fishing history, mark your calendar.

Easy summer excursions from São Jacinto

If you are staying more than a few nights, consider one or two day trips. Porto is always worth a trip (Agenda Porto: July/August 2026 Events). Go by bus and train via the Aveiro railway station, because finding a parking spot in Porto poses a challenge even outside the season.

Coimbra also deserves a spot on your list of planned excursions by train or car from Aveiro. While the city can get quite hot in summer, you can pick a day with more moderate temperatures or plan to spend your time wandering the halls of its old university and its world-famous Biblioteca Joanina.

In 2026, the Feira Medieval de Coimbra runs from 17 to 19 July around the Sé Velha, Quebra Costas, Arco de Almedina, and nearby streets (official registration page for performers/merchants). Admission is free.

You will like Coimbra's compact historic setting if you enjoy old (or, in this case, ancient) towns, markets, and history at every corner without theme-park vibes.

For a larger medieval event, Viagem Medieval in Santa Maria da Feira (a short drive north from São Jacinto) runs from 29 July to 9 August 2026 (official page). Be prepared for a much bigger production than in Coimbra, spread through the historic center around the town’s giant castle. Older guests or families with small children may want to go earlier in the day and avoid trying to see everything.
